In Memoriam: CK Prahalad

Recently we saw the passing of a great thinker.  CK Prahalad, born in India in 1941, was one of nine children.  Early in his career he joined Union Carbide.  He earned his B.Sc degree in Physics from Loyola College, Chennai, part of the University of Madras. Prahalad completed his post graduate work in management at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.

He attended Harvard Business School, where he wrote a doctoral thesis on multinational management in just two and a half years, earning him a D.B.A. degree in 1975.  He worked in India and the United States in higher education and consulted with many organizations around the world. 

Here are a few key facts and accomplishments of his: 

•             He was married to Gayatri

•             A father of two

•             Co-author of The Core Competence of the Corporation (with Gary Hamel, Harvard Business Review, May–June, 1990)

•             Co-author of The Future of Competition (with Venkat Ramaswamy)

•             Author and co-author of several other bestselling books

•             Last book published was The New Age of Innovation.

•             Top 10 management thinkers in various surveys for the last 10 years

On April 16, 2010, Prahalad died of a previously undiagnosed lung illness in San Diego.
